Dress for the Water, Not the Weather: Cold Shock Kills Before Hypothermia
Ask paddlers what cold water does and most say hypothermia — a slow, shivering decline over hours. The data says otherwise: most immersion victims die in the first minutes, fully conscious, often good swimmers. The thesis from cold-water physiology: cold shock and swimming failure, not hypothermia, are the primary killers — which rewrites what “prepared” means.
The 1-10-1 rule

Cardiac history and QT conditions raise sudden-immersion risk independent of gear. And overheating in a drysuit on hot days is its own hazard to manage.
