The Kiln Decides: Quartz, Glass, and the 573°C Moment of Truth


A leather-hard pot feels permanent. It isn’t — drop it in water and it dissolves back to slip. What makes clay ceramic happens invisibly inside the kiln, across transformations precise enough to set your firing schedule by. The thesis: firing is a sequence of irreversible chemical thresholds — water loss, quartz inversion, vitrification — and nearly every firing failure is a threshold crossed too fast.

The three thresholds

First, dehydration: mechanical water steams off below 100 °C (rush this with damp ware and pieces explode), then chemically bound crystal water — 10%+ of kaolin’s weight — escapes through the “water smoking” phase up past red heat, irreversibly converting clay to ceramic (Digitalfire’s firing guide; LibreTexts overview).

Second, quartz inversion at 573 °C: every quartz grain’s crystal lattice snaps from alpha to beta form, expanding ~1–2% in minutes — then reversing on cooling (Digitalfire glossary; Ceramic Arts Network). On heat-up, porous bisque absorbs the shrug; on cooling, the new glassy matrix cannot — fast cooling through 573 °C (and cristobalite’s nastier 226 °C contraction) cracks ware along every thickness gradient. The rule potters chant: fire through inversion slowly, both directions, especially on glaze firings and refires.

Third, vitrification: above ~1000 °C, fluxes melt into glass that dissolves silica, welds particles, and grows needle-like mullite crystals — the stone-like strength of the final piece. Earthenware stops early (porous, glass-welded); porcelain goes far (dense, glassy); every body has its maturation window, and cones measure heat-work, not just temperature.

The counterpoint: schedules serve ware, not dogma

Slow-everywhere firing wastes energy and can itself cause defects (bloating, pinholing from over-soaking). Dense porcelain needs babying through inversions; open raku bodies shrug them off. Modern controllers and witness cones let you slow only at thresholds — 100 °C for steam, 573 °C both ways, 226 °C cooling — and push elsewhere.
