Chickens Don't Need Heaters — They Need Dry Air: The Science of Wintering Hens


Every winter, well-meaning keepers install heat lamps — and every winter, coops burn down while unheated flocks thrive at -20 °F. The contradiction resolves with physiology. The thesis from extension science: chickens are tropical-jungle birds wearing expedition parkas; winter losses come from moisture and drafts, not cold — so ventilate, don’t heat.

The bird as furnace

A chicken runs at ~106 °F wrapped in down that fluffs into trapped-air insulation; cold-hardy breeds (Chantecler, Wyandotte, Orpington) add small combs and dense feathering (ChickenStarter cold-climate guide). Minnesota Extension advises heat only below 35 °F coop temps — conditions a sound coop rarely reaches (UMN Extension). The real enemy is humidity: respiration plus 70%-water manure loads coop air; moist air condenses on combs and wattles, and wet tissue freezes far faster (Poultry Extension on frostbite). Hence the paradoxical rule: seal drafts at roost level, but ventilate hard above — ~1 ft² vent per 10 ft² floor, humidity under ~60%. The counterpoint: when heat is right

Exceptions exist: silkies and small-combed Mediterranean breeds, molting or sick birds, chicks obviously, and extreme week-long polar snaps where waterers freeze solid. Heat lamps remain the leading cause of coop fires — flat-panel radiant heaters on thermostats are far safer. And winter egg drops are hormonal (light), not thermal: no lamp fixes photoperiod.
