Two Sticks, Thirty Percent Less Knee: The Biomechanics of Trekking Poles


Hikers divide bitterly over poles: essential tool or fussy affectation? The argument usually runs on anecdote — sore knees versus free hands. But a handful of researchers put force sensors inside a human knee and settled the physics. The thesis: properly used trekking poles measurably offload the knee — by up to a third — with the biggest savings exactly where hikers hurt most: descents under load.

Forces measured from inside the joint

The gold-standard data comes from a patient with a force-measuring knee implant who tested nine gait patterns (Kinney et al., 2013). Long poles with wide placement cut medial knee contact force up to 34% and lateral force up to 26% versus normal walking — the largest reduction of any modification tested, achieved by transferring ground reaction through the arms and trimming the knee adduction moment. An earlier analysis of the same implant (Fregly et al., 2009) found pole walking cut medial force 27% over the whole stance phase.

Downhill, where impact peaks, poles shine brightest. Eight men descending a 25° ramp (Schwameder et al., 1999) showed 12–25% reductions in tibiofemoral compression, shear, and knee moments with poles — via pole forces plus a more forward-leaning posture that shortens the knee’s lever arm. Add a backpack and the benefit persists: fifteen loaded hikers (Bohne & Abendroth-Smith, 2007) showed reduced joint moments and power absorption at ankle, knee, and hip with poles across all pack weights up to 30% of body weight.

The counterpoint: technique taxes and trade-offs

Poles aren’t free. They raise energy cost slightly, occupy hands needed for scrambling, complicate transport, and can increase tripping if planted lazily. The implant studies are single-subject — exquisite measurement, narrow generalizability. Benefits concentrate in mid-to-late stance, not at heel strike where forces peak. And poles don’t replace the fundamentals: pack weight, footwear, and descent technique (short steps, soft knees) dominate injury risk.

For descents, heavy packs, or aching knees: use two adjustable poles, set so elbows sit near 90° on flat ground, lengthened downhill, planted rhythmically opposite-foot. The physics says your knees will pay roughly a quarter less per step — over a 15 km descent, that’s a meaningful retirement contribution to your joints.
